The Future of Cruising

Below are details of a conference organised by RYA NI.

Saturday 24 January 2009
Royal Ulster Yacht Club, Bangor

Stuart Carruthers, RYA’s Cruising Manager, will start the day with an overview of the crunch issues for cruising sailors. Top yacht designer, Nigel Irens, who among other things is famous for designing record breaking racing catamarans for both Ellen McArthur and Francis Joyon and the Westernman cruising yachts as currently sailed by Tom Cunliffe, will discuss boat design and development. Professor David Last of the Royal Institute of Navigation will speak about electronic navigation while Capt Robert McCabe of Irish Lights will talk about more traditional aids to navigation. Further sessions will cover safety, and ‘Smelling the Roses’ – about voyaging further and/or keeping one’s boat abroad.

Autumn/Winter Series

James Farrell has taken on the task of organising a rota for race officers between now and Christmas. To do this he needs as many volunteers as possible to come forward.

Racing is every Sunday, with two planned Saturdays 27 September & 18th October. A race officer is needed from about 12:00 until 1:30 / 2:00. There will be help with all aspects (course/results etc) from an experienced sailor each day. (Michael, Gerry Shannon, John Lowry or James)

So please respond to this and ‘do a day’!
James: | 028 2177 172 / 078 1686 3515

Also, Michael is looking after the rescue officer rota. If you would be able to help with this please get in touch with him.

The Dinghy Regatta has moved to Saturday 27th September. Sponsorship is being finalised. More details will follow.

Dinghy Sailing – Winter Series

There are still a number of trophies to be sailed for as there was a lack of races during the summer.  It would be great to see an increased number of boats out on the water

Sailing needs your support – let’s make a big effort to get involved

Meeting to be held Sunday 14th at approx 2.30pm (after sailing) to discuss the winter series and keep members informed

Issues to be raised at meeting include;

  • ‘Fast boat’s’ (Cats, RS800 & Dutchman) longer course?
  • Trophies
  • Rescue Boat and OOD rota

Your support is vital to successful and enjoyable Sunday sailing

Races will take place each Sunday at 12.30pm – SHARP! (Do not be late!)

If you are not sailing please volunteer to assist with either rescue boat or OOD duties – these positions must be manned and help would be greatly appreciated

If you are able to assist with Rescue Boat or OOD duties please contact; Gerry Shannon, John Lowry or Michael McLaughlin. Alternatively, please leave name and contact number in the space provided on the notice board in the club

VAT 19 Trophy

Dinghy race this Saturday 9th August.

Warning signal 1130

There is a lot going on this weekend but with an early start, we can be off the water by around 1pm.

Although some of us may have other commitments and it is short notice, it would be good to get as many boats out as possible.
