“What is the minimum age for sailing courses?”
8 years old. This is based on how First Aid is administered. A child under this age is treated differently, and therefore is outside the first aid qualifications of our instructors.
“What dates are the courses on?”
Our standard courses are the RYA Sailing Scheme which run Monday to Friday every week of the summer, the first course being Monday 4th July 2011 and the last is Monday 15th August 2011. The courses run from 10am to 4.30pm with approximately an hour for lunch.
“How much does it cost?”
Prices are £130 for non members and £120 for members of Cushendall Sailing and Boating Club, the cheapest in Northern Ireland.
“What if I can’t commit to the full 5 days?”
We can cater for individual 1-on-1 tuition from one of our qualified instructors charged at a daily rate. This can suit couples and is for minimum of 2 days, at £75 per day.
“What if the weather is bad, or there is no wind? What happens?”
There is plenty of theory involved in sailing, so we use the class room to learn and discuss different aspects as well as using RYA training DVDs that show demonstrations of specific manoeuvres. Items on the boat, knot tying, learning games etc can also be looked at on shore although we try to spend the majority of time on the water where possible.
If the weather is good but just no wind for sailing, we’ll usually take to the water anyway for some games and perhaps a spot of kayaking!
“What do we need to bring for a sailing course?”
You will need to bring your own wetsuit, suitable footwear (old trainers), a change of dry clothes and a packed lunch.
“Can we go home for lunch?”
Most people stay and have their lunch at the picnic tables or on our lawn beside the club. Adults may leave to go home during the lunch hour. Those under the age of 18 need a written slip from a guardian stating that they are allowed to go home during lunch, and acknowledging that CSBC will not be held responsible for those travelling to and from the club during this time.
My brother/uncle/aunt/grandfather/dog/sister has been a member at the club for years, can we get members rates through them? Or if we book on say 6 people, can we get a discounted rate?
Unfortunately no. The cost of the course strictly applies to the person attending the course and not the person making the booking. Also, discounted rates for groups open up so much debate as to who gets it and how it is applied that we operate a strict price with no discounts. Sorry!
How do I know if there are spaces available for the week I want?
Given the number of qualified instructors at CSBC, we rarely have to turn down customers; however the busiest weeks are those of 12th July and during the Glens of Antrim Festival Week in August. During these weeks you need to book early, otherwise you should be fine if booked a little in advance. To avoid disappointment, we recommend booking at the earliest opportunity.
